Intellectual Property

Our firm’s Intellectual Property Department takes pride in its responsiveness, efficiency, reliability and diligence in servicing our clients in a cost-effective, time-efficient and highly qualitative manner.

Intellectual property (“IP”) law affords protection to intangible creations of the mind by enabling individuals and businesses to benefit from their creation and preventing others from exploiting it. Some types of IP are copyright, patents and trademarks. Copyright protects an original literary or artistic work, such as books, movies, designs, paintings, computer programs, music, databases, sculptures, maps. Patent protection is afforded to inventions that provide a new technical solution to a problem or that provide a new and non-obvious process or design.  Trademarks protection is afforded to the mark that distinguishes a source of goods or services from others and it may be consisted of a combination of words, letters and numbers, drawings, symbols, sounds, even fragrances.

With the evolvement of cyberspace and the expansion of businesses on an international level, the harmonisation of IP laws is seen as an essential tool in order to provide certainty and adequate protection to authors, creators and inventors, considering that IP assets constitute valuable possessions.

Cyprus has adopted all major international IP conventions and treaties, including the Berne Convention on the Protection of Artistic and Literary Work, the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property, the Patent Cooperation Treaty and the Madrid Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Marks; has harmonized the IP legislation with EU law and; has adopted the standards and requirements of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).

Considering the protection afforded by the local IP law and the efficient tax regime, Cyprus, being an international business and investment center, is as an attractive location for establishing an IP structure.
