On the 19th of September 2019, our Advocate Mr. Zacharias Kapsis of the Shipping Department represented A. Karitzis & Associates L.L.C, attending the first monthly event for 2019 organised by the Cyprus Marine Club, of which our firm is a member.
The event took place in New Marina, in Limassol, Cyprus and its topic focused on the Guidance for compliance with the forthcoming EU Ship Recycling (Regulation No.1257/2013) and the Inventory Hazardous Material (IHM). The presentation was conducted by Mr. Nicos Attas, Marine Chief Executive, Marine and Offshore Division Bureau Veritas (Cyprus) Ltd.
The European Ship Recycling Regulation entered into force on December 30th, 2013 to reduce the negative impacts linked to the recycling of ships. It requires both shipowners and yards to take a proactive approach to safety and environment protection in ship recycling with a special focus on management of hazardous materials.
One of the main goals of the aforesaid regulation is to enhance safety, protection of human health and of the Union marine environment ensuring that ship hazardous waste is subject to environmentally sound recycling management.
All new and existing ships of 500 GT and above, flying EU flag, must comply with the aforesaid European Ship Recycling Regulation. More specifically, they must carry on board a verified “Inventory of Hazardous Materials” (IHM) report with International IHM Certificate by 31 December 2020.
On the other hand, ships flying the flag of a third (Non-EU) country, when calling at a Cyprus port or anchorage, shall comply with the requirement to have on board a verified IHM report with a Statement of Compliance from 31 December 2020.
